Have you ever heard of this SDA argument that Colossians 2:14-17 refers to a book that Moses wrote, which book was nailed to the cross?
Here is what Doug Batchelor says to explain Col2:14 and that the ceremonial law was nailed to the cross (https://www.facebook.com/reel/1304324757308053).
“The ceremonial laws were not written on stone, they were written on paper. Moses instructed the children of Israel take the scroll put it in a pocket on the outside of the Ark of the Covenant that it might be a witness against you. [He] uses the very words Paul is specifically talking about the ceremonial laws that were to be a witness against them that contained ceremonial Sabbaths. Wasn’t talking about the 10 Commandments inside the Ark of the Covenant” (Doug Batchelor).
So, basically, the book that contained ceremonial laws was nailed to the cross, hence the ceremonial laws was nailed with it. So, if a book is nailed to the cross, the contents of the book have been nailed to the cross, right? But the content in a book that was not nailed is still in force, right?
Let us ask some questions to Doug Batchelor and those of the same thinking
Question 1 – Which book is this that was by the side of the ark? Pentateuch? Genesis?, Exodus? Leviticus? Numbers? Deuteronomy?
It is Deuteronomy (Deuteronomy 31:26 Take this book of the law, and put it in the side of the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, that it may be there for a witness against thee.)
Question 2 – Was this a ceremonial law book?
No, it wasn’t. In fact Deuteronomy is hardly ceremonial of the Pentateuch. It is far more moral than ceremonial, even the 10 Commandments written in it (Ch 5). Leviticus is the real ceremonial book, but it never says it was placed by the Ark.
Question 3 – If Deuteronomy was nailed to the cross, why do we use it today?
Question 4 – If the contents of the book are nailed by virtue of being in the book that was nailed, what happened to majority of Deuteronomy’s content that is not ceremonial?
Question 5 – What do we do with the real ceremonial book of Leviticus since it was not nailed to the cross, should we follow what it says about ceremonial laws, e.g. Leviticus 23?
Question 6 – How about the ten commandments in Deuteronomy 6, was that nailed to the cross too. If not, how did it escape from the book?
You see, my brethren like Doug Batchelor have read these things from some SDA books and both them and the books they read never paused to think about which book was at the side of the ark and as to whether it is logical to nail the contents of a book by virtue of nailing the book itself, given that the contents are repeated many times elsewhere.
That argument, that the ceremonial law was nailed to the cross in a book is so lame its painful to hear otherwise intelligent people using it. In any case, was there anything that even remotely symbolized a written book at the cross. The symbolism of a ceremonial book is totally fictitious.
And by the way Pastor Doug, Paul in Colossian 2:14 is not using the same language was Moses in Deuteronomy 31:26. That is an error that people make because the English words are similar. The “witness against thee” in Deuteronomy means to remind you when you go astray (Deuteronomy 31:27), but in Colossians “witness against us” means “in opposition to us”. Otherwise, Deuteronomy itself was given as a blessing (Deuteronomy 4:6), and yes, a record that reminds you of where you are going astray is indeed a blessing..
